Did you know that poor air quality in your workplace can impact employee performance as well as health?
Due to a recent study, carried out by Harvard University, it is believed that indoor environments affect the decision-making performance of employees. Decision-making is often the primary indicator of productivity (Ref 1). As a result of these findings, it is suggested that the levels of carbon dioxide and VOCs, which are found in almost all conventional buildings, are therefore responsible for a decrease in worker performance.
Perhaps one of the most convincing results to evidence this is that:
Cognitive performance scores averaged 101% higher in green buildings with enhanced ventilation.
Furthermore, there are several case studies where a business has moved from a conventional building, with poor air quality, to green buildings with enhanced heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This has greatly improved air quality and reported findings such as:
- Up to 40% fall in sick leave
- Up to 18% decline in occupational health and safety incidents
- Improved staff concentration
A recent white paper presented by Moorepay earlier this year also highlights the cost that employee absenteeism and sick days have on businesses (Ref 2).
Their research found that 85% of small and medium sized businesses admit that their staff take between three and five sick days every year. This level of absenteeism costs the private sector an average of £522 per employee each year.
Do you know how much sickness and absenteeism is costing your business?
It is simple to do a basic calculation to find out the average cost of absenteeism for your business:
Average employee day rate
X
Total absence days
=
Average cost of absence
How to Reduce Absenteeism and Sick Days:
One effective way of reducing employee sickness is to improve the indoor air quality (IAQ) of your working environment.
Indoor pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), solvents from cleaning products and ozone produced by photocopiers, all contribute to sick building syndrome.
The Ingenious Air® System can significantly improve IAQ and eradicate sick building syndrome. The High specification air purification module combines three powerful technologies (high grade F7 filter, UV light filtration and PRO Cell technology) to remove all types of serious airborne indoor pollutants:
- Disease-causing viruses and bacteria
- Allergens (e.g. hay fever and asthma) and dust
- Harmful volatile organic compounds, pollutants and odours
