Clean indoor air is quickly becoming the latest luxury must-have in many leading countries, including China. But is this yet another fad or the future?
In Shanghai, China, you’ll find the recently opened Cordis hotel – a luxury hotel boasting a glass-sided swimming pool, ballrooms, a spa and more. Sounds like any other upscale hotel but this one has a clear difference: filtered air that is up to 10 times cleaner than outside.
This filtration system works by passing the air through two levels, which constantly cleans, as well as keeping all the double-glazed windows sealed. In all 396 guest rooms you’ll find a TV displaying the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels. The TVs also have pollution monitors integrated.
The dangers related to air quality from city pollution isn’t new information, but indoor air is becoming an equally dangerous battleground. In fact, in very polluted cities, indoor air quality can be even worse than outdoors. Heavy air entering homes, offices through open windows and/or poor insulation raises additional concerns. Formaldehyde, carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be emitted from furniture, paints and other substances.
“Indoor pollution is a very serious problem and a health threat worldwide. Most people spend 90% of their time indoors, and the exposures that we are getting from that time remain largely unexamined.” – Sieren Ernst, Environmental Consultancy Ethics & Environment.
Public awareness in China is rising, with air purifier sales expected to more than double in size to 7.5m, in a market worth nearly 16.5bn renminbi. Part of that rise includes employers who continue to install air filters, air quality monitors and more, in their workplaces.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are an estimated 6.5 million early deaths every year related to indoor and outdoor air pollution. On the other hand, data analysis by the German Institute of Global and Area Studies, found that working in an office with high-level filtration systems, can raise an employee’s life expectancy. Staff in Tishman’s China offices gained an average over 6 days a year.
With never ending statistics, is it really surprising the rapid expansion of the clean air market is also left questionable? There is a multitude of unreliable products on the market, which fail to provide safe and purified air – the very thing they promise. In fact, according to the Xinhua news outlet, 25% of consumer air purifiers tested by a government inspection agency failed quality checks.
It’s safe to say with the alarming amount of deaths related to indoor and outdoor air pollution, it isn’t and shouldn’t be a fad. Implementing stricter air quality rules are fast approaching but you can get ahead of the curve.
The Ingenious Air® Small Duct System is an intelligent climate control system that has an optional high specification air purification module. It removes VOCs and other harmful pollutants that are naked to the eye. It also removes disease-causing viruses and bacteria, allergens, dust and odours.
Additionally, the system can add up to 100% outside air ventilation with heat recovery ventilation. This can further improve air quality and save energy. At the same time, it provides a safe and comfortable indoor environment with clean, purified air.
Backed by years of experience, research and development, various case studies and installed in trusted brands such as Apple, Subway, Pandora and more, this genuine system is the future.
